Introduction
Today's minimum wage in the Philippines is insufficient due to the high inflation rate. This creates a difficult situation for many low-income workers, who struggle to make ends meet. For example, a family of five with parents earning minimum wage often finds themselves in a precarious financial situation. The cost of living continues to rise, while the minimum wage remains stagnant. This results in a cycle of poverty that is challenging to break. Additionally, many minimum wage jobs do not offer benefits such as health insurance or paid time off, which further exacerbates the financial strain on workers.
Problem
The minimum wage in the Philippines is a significant issue, as many minimum wage earners are unable to cover their basic needs with their current salaries. This problem has persisted for years, with the cost of living continually rising while the minimum wage remains unchanged. The lack of financial stability for minimum wage earners has led to various social and economic problems, such as poverty and inequality. Many individuals are forced to work multiple jobs just to make ends meet, leaving them with little time for rest and leisure. This also negatively impacts their health and well-being, as they are often overworked and underpaid.
Solution
To address this issue, policymakers must consider raising the minimum wage to a level that reflects the true cost of living. Although the Senate labor panel approved “in principle” on Wednesday a proposal for a P150 across-the-board daily minimum wage hike after just one public hearing (Gregorio, 2023), is helpful. This would not only help low-income workers make ends meet but also stimulate the economy by increasing consumer spending. Additionally, employers should be encouraged to provide benefits and opportunities for career advancement for their employees. By taking these steps, we can create a more equitable society where everyone has access to basic necessities and the opportunity to thrive.
